Mr Turnbull, a former shopkeeper, was said to be still in a "poorly, but stable" condition in hospital after undergoing treatment for his injuries believed to include a brainscan.
Neighbours alerted police after spotting two men donning gloves and hoodies at 1.15am and entering the garden of the house Mr Turnbull shares with his landlord.
Police went to the scene and the West Yorkshire Police helicopter carried out a search of the area after finding the injured pensioner and discovering a burglary at the property.
Officers have declined to comment, but the Yorkshire Evening Post understands that police are seeking a second suspect in connection with the burglary.
