Armouries wants firms to join knight clubbers
By Charles Heslett IN Arthurian legend it was the highest accolade to be asked to become a member of the Round Table.
Even today a commoner normally has to be touched on the shoulders with a sword by the Queen before the transaformation into a fully-fledged knight is complete.
But a new breed of noblemen and women is emerging in the heart of Leeds.
Bosses at The Royal Armouries are offering firms the chance to join their elite "Knight Club".
The "club" is in fact a new corporate membership scheme being offered by the Clarence Dock-based museum as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.
By paying a graded fee – there are three levels of membership called appropriately Galahad, Lancelot and King Arthur – each company gets to sponsor various community events put on by the museum as part of its "conflict" programme being run throughout 2006.
In return the business's logo and name appears on any associated literature or posters.
Claire Harder, a Royal Armouries Museum spokeswoman, said: "The Knight Club has been established to help fund our community work.
"Throughout the year a series of events, exhibitions and activities will be rolled out backed by the Knight Club. We are encouraging corporate organisations across Yorkshire to become members.
"They will work in conjunction with the museum to deliver its programme of activities to confront issues relating to conflict."
One of these schemes is the Flashpoint project, a conflict resolution programme for children in Leeds who find themselves alienated from the school environment.
Cathy Mason, from Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA), and Doctor Eddie Halpin, from Leeds Metropolitan University, became the first two to sign up to the club when they met the museum's chair of trustees Ann Green.
She said: "We look forward to working with them throughout the Royal Armouries Museum's 10th birthday year".
