Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband too broke to pay for his burglary
DOOMED COUPLE: Fielder-Civil with Amy Winehouse in 2007.
The penniless ex-husband of late pop singer Amy Winehouse has been ordered to pay back £1 towards the cost of a burglary he carried out in Leeds.
Fielder-Civil, 30, was jailed for two years and eight months last June – a month before the star’s death – for burglary and possession of a fake firearm.
He appeared before Leeds Crown Court yesterday following a further investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The court heard that Fielder-Civil benefited to the tune of £3,500 from the break-in at a family home in Rawdon on February 28 last year.
Ewan McLachlan, prosecuting, said Fielder-civil had no assets or money to contribute towards the sum. Mr McLachlan said: “The defendant held a number of bank accounts that appear to be empty.”
He asked judge Kerry McGill to make a technical order that Fielder should pay the sum of £1. The judge ordered the amount to be paid within seven days.
He told Fielder-Civil that the order was a formality and added: “You can go back to custody to finish your sentence.”
Fielder-Civil, who was in the dock wearing a designer sports jacket, replied: “Thank you your honour.” He was then led back into custody.
Fielder-Civil and another man carried out the raid to feed their heroin addictions. They broke into the home on Woodlands Drive and stole electrical items and jewellery after searching every room in the property, including children’s bedrooms. The pair were stopped by police shortly after in a car with fake number plates.
The imitation handgun was found inside the vehicle and the stolen items were still in the boot.
Judge Scott Wolstenholme told them: “This was an illustration of the depths to which people sink when they are in the grip of heroin addiction.”
Fielder-Civil and Winehouse were married in May 2007 in Miami. They divorced in 2009 after a turbulent on-off relationship. Winehouse was found dead at her home in London on July 23 last year after she had spent the night drinking. A coroner reported a verdict of misadventure. Fielder-Civil has a new partner and became a father shortly before being jailed.
