Abigail visited Ghana for two weeks to help teach youngsters aged between 10 and 16 years old English, sport and art during her summer break.

The 17-year-old from Cookridge decided that she wanted to do something useful with her spare time and saved up around 2,000 to pay for the trip.

Abigail was amazed by the sights she saw and said: "It has been something that I have wanted to do for a while and I wanted to do it before I went away to university.

"The people there just loved it and the whole experience was completely mind-blowing.

"It was overwhelming because they have such a different lifestyle over there. It was strange to think that I was halfway across the world and doing something completely different.

"Their way of life just opened my mind and it just made some of the things in our country seem really petty. Taxis over there are really small and cramped compared to over here."

Abigail is studying for her A-Levels in biology, art and physics and hopes to go to university to study architecture. She has even inspired some of her friends to get the travelling bug as well.

She added: "It was quite surreal when I got everything booked and when I finally got out there. There was so much to see and do.

"I would definitely look at doing something like this again but I probably won't be able to afford it for a while.

"I hope to go to different countries and find out what their way of life is like. Some of my friends even want to go travelling now."
