A day of events in memory of Leeds teenage biker

The family of a "cheeky and lovable" Leeds teenage biker who died in a road smash, are hosting a charity night in his memory.

Ciaran Patrick Bingham, 19, of Belle Isle, was in a coma for eight days before he died in January due to serious head injuries.

Now his family are organising a 13-mile sponsored walk and memorial night to raise money for The Hunslet Club, in Leeds.

Mum Margaret, 51, said: "I want Ciaran's memory to live on and we don't want people to forget him because he was such a big character. For days (after he died) I didn't event want to get dressed or anything and organising this has given me something to focus on. If not, I would have given up."

Ciaran suffered fatal head injuries when his Yamaha DT125 bike was involved in a collision with a BMW car on Ledger Lane at Outwood, Wakefield.

Before his death, he had taken up courses at The Hunslet Club in plastering, plumbing, dj-ing and car mechanics after struggling to settle at school.

"He wasn't naughty, he was mis-understood and he got quite of qualifications there," said Margaret.

"Ciaran was always confident and quite intelligent but he just didn't like the classroom environment. This year he had wanted to volunteer (at the Hunslet Club) and mentor the kids. His life had changed."

Ciaran, who is one of five boys, had been a pupil at St Thomas Becket Catholic College, Wakefield, and worked as a trader at Wakefield Market before and after school.

"He liked to make a bit of money, he was like Rodney Trotter! He loved motorbikes and he loved sport but his main ambition was to get a good job and to marry Beth."

Beth Prince, 18, met Ciaran while he worked on the fruit and veg market stall. She said: "I was with Ciaran since I was 15. He was loving and a real joker. There was not one bad thing about him."

The memorial day begins at 8am on Saturday July 10 with the sponsored walk starting at St Thomas Becket Catholic College. Already, 80 walkers have signed up but Beth and Magaret are appealing for more to get involved.

The memorial night will be at the Hunslet Club from 7pm with raffles,

burlesque dancing and music.

They are appealing for anyone who could donate raffle prizes to get in

touch as Margaret said: "What I would really love is a car to auction or a family holiday. I cannot afford to buy them myself otherwise I would."

All money raised will go to the Hunslet Club which has been used by the Bingham family for years.

To donate or take part in Ciaran's memorial event contact The Hunslet Club, Hillidge Road, Leeds, on 0113 2716489 or email: club@hunsletclub.org.uk
