A new marathon being staged as a legacy to Jane Tomlinson has officially sold out – with 5,500 places being snapped up in three days.

The first ever Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon, which will be held in York and the surrounding countryside, on October 20, was only launched on Tuesday but after places went fast discussions with health and safety managers and others allowed organisers to release a further 500 places. However, all of those have now been sold.

Talks are now on-going to see whether, in coming months, capacity can be increased by another 500 to allow 6,000 to take part. Those who wish to be put on a waiting list should register on the www.theyorkshiremarathon.com website.

Mrs Tomlinson, from Leeds, raised nearly £2m for charity in a series of gruelling sporting challenges despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
