3D Leeds - through the eyes of schoolchildren

A film made by school pupils featuring animals and robots exploring a 3D version of Leeds has been screened at a local cinema.

Children from Brudenell Primary School, Hyde Park, appeared on the red carpet at the premiere of My World, My Family and Me.

The youngsters made the film – screened at Hyde Park Picture House this week – as part of the Creative Partnerships programme, which involved exploring and celebrating Leeds through the eyes of a child and parent.

Research

To complete their research, pupils and parents toured Leeds to find free activities, using public transport to travel around.

The school then created 3D miniature versions of Leeds, including the places and spaces visited and the vehicles used to get there, before introducing animals and robots who were experiencing the city for the first time.

Parents, children and staff were provided with video cameras during the trip, with the footage edited by film-maker Jennifer Morris.

Teacher Caroline Ibberson said: "We envisaged an organic, child and parent-led project that could lead on to unknown, exciting possibilities for performance, installation or exhibition work inside or outside the school building.

"By providing parents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to

carry out life skills such as buying train tickets in the station, how to find a platform or read a timetable, we have indirectly opened up the world for their children."

The nationwide Creative Partnerships programme aims to help schools explore creativity and drive improvements.

Jill Harland, headteacher at Brudenell, said: "We are passionate about improving the quality of curriculum provision to ensure it is creative and raises standards.

"Our staff have been working tirelessly all year to provide a curriculum that responds to the interests and passions of our pupils. This project seemed to be the natural progression from that.

"We have a strong group of parents who are now firm friends and as a result of their increased self-esteem, engage in other parent groups within the school."
