2013 Leeds Sports Awards: Golden Olympic duo scoop top gongs

GOLDEN duo Nicola Adams and Alistair Brownlee scooped the top awards at the star-studded Leeds Sports Awards.

The city’s two gold medallists from the London 2012 Olympics were named Sportswoman and Sportsman Of The Year respectively at the Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road.

A record number of 510 people attended the glitzy bash, an increase on the 374 that present in 2012.

Boxing sensation Adams edged out highly commended London 2012 cycling silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead in her category with triathlete star Brownlee beating off his younger brother and Summer bronze medallist Jonathan Brownlee.

Another cycling ace, London Paralympics gold medallist David Stone, was named Disability Sportsman of the Year with double golden girl wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft winning the female category.

Leeds Rhinos, who sent a strong representation to the awards, were named Professional Team/Club of the Year with Harehills-based Bad Company Thai Boxing gym taking the Non-Professional Team/Club of the Year accolade.

Rhinos ace Kevin Sinfield was also named Professional Player of the Year.

Almost inevitably, the City Of Leeds Diving team were in the awards with Jack Laugher named Young Sportsman of the Year and Matty Lee named Junior Sportsperson of the Year.

The team were also named Young Team/Club of the Year with Adrian Hinchliffe and Edwin Jongejans also highly commended in the professional Performance Coach of the Year behind triathlon coaches Jack Maitland and Malcolm Brown.

In other highlights, swimming ace Sophie Taylor was named Young Sportswoman of the Year with another swimming star Danielle Bailey taking the Young Disability Performer of the Year award.
