£250,000 seizures by Wakefield fraud police

CASH and cars worth almost a quarter of a million pounds were seized in fraud cops' swoops in Wakefield this week.

As reported in the YEP on Thursday, 10 people were arrested in the raids on properties and businesses in the Agbrigg and Sandal areas.

The early-morning operation on Wednesday was aimed at cracking a fraud and money laundering ring in the area.

The 10 arrested have all been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police say amongst items recovered were approximately 150,000 cash, 14 cars with a total value believed to be in excess of 150,000 including a BMW X5, Jaguar XKR and a Mazerati, and a significant amount of gold jewellery.

What was believed to be a cannabis farm was also discovered and dismantled by police who say enquiries are ongoing.

DCI Andy Williams, Wakefield District Division Crime Manager, said: "The local Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently conducting follow up enquiries and reassurance patrols in the area. Feedback we have received from the local community has been very positive so far.

"I would still urge members of the public if they know of anyone who is profiting from illegal activity to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.whyshouldthey.co.uk."
