council chiefs today revealed a £10m plan to safeguard Leeds’s Kirkgate Market.
They have told the YEP that they would use the money to “re-invent” the run-down building, creating a world-class destination.
Coun Gerry Harper, Labour’s lead member for development, said: “One option we are considering is borrowing £10m from the Government, securing it on the market as an asset and using that money to improve it.”
He quashed rumours that the council planned to sell off the market, but said a final decision on whether to borrow the money will not be made until next year.
