I taught with Bill when he was Head of Geography at Huntington School York. He was a real professional; always thoughtful, very much in control and anxious for his students to achieve the best they could.

Outside the classroom, he was a true Scot, always up for some friendly banter with us English types and it was impossible not to like him. His premature death is a tragedy. My condolences go out to his family and all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Billy and I used to have a few beers together when he visited our family in Lockerbie. He and I had many a friendly blether about football and life in general. We remember when he and my sister threaded their way through many roadblocks to visit us the day after the Lockerbie disaster to give their support to our family after we witnessed such a terrible tragedy.

With telephones down they just didn't know what they were going to find when they got to us, fortunately we were safe.

His passing will be a sad loss to his family, colleagues and friends

From the Trudt family in Lockerbie, deepest sympathy to you all.
