Wortley High School has status

Wortley High School has been awarded coveted specialist status from the Government.

Wortley High has become a specialist arts college, recognising the schools work in performing arts and English.

The Government gives the award to schools which prove that their focus and expertise in particular area can raise standards across the school, as well as getting children involved.

Gill Knuttson, headteacher at Wortley High School, said: "Receiving arts status reflects a lot of hard work, and also a lot of success.

"We really value creativity. Producing a piece of art or poetry can build confidence and selfesteem in a way that traditional academic studies can't always do, and offers our young people an experience they won't necessarily get elsewhere.

"We wanted a specialism which complements West Leeds' technology college status, and along with Farnley Park's maths and computing status we are providing excellent and improving opportunities for the area's young people."

There are now 32 secondary schools and two Specialist Inclusive Learning Centres (SILCs) in Leeds, focusing on eight areas – arts, business and enterprise, humanities, languages, maths and computing, science, sports and technology.

Wortley High School's case for specialist statuswas based on the school's performing arts teachers working with local primary schools, piloting the new creative and media diploma and an increase in standards across the school with a big jump in GCSE results.

Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "Over 80 per cent of our secondary schools are now specialists, where young people not only benefit from innovative teaching and first-rate facilities in the specialist area, but across the curriculum as a whole.

"Specialist schools are leading the way, helping to transform learning and give even more of our young people the chance to be happy, healthy, safe and increasingly successful."

Stephen Towler, chair of governors at Wortley High, added: "Important as specialist status is to Wortley High, it is about far more than just our school.

"This will help us build on existing links with the community and create new opportunities for people of all ages in Wortley."
