Work starts on extension to Horsforth church
Work has begun on a much-anticipated extension to a Horsforth church thanks to months of community fundraising.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Brian Cleasby officially marked the start by digging the first turf for the new 400,000 extension to St Margaret's Church in Horsforth.
Parishioners launched a major fundraising campaign last year to raise the cash needed for the project.
The building will include meeting rooms, kitchen and toilets which will be linked to the north porch of the church.
It will be made of local stone with a slate roof, incorporating low carbon, sustainable and energy efficient materials.
Money has been raised through the sale of the Curate's house, bequests, donations, and grants including 20,000 from Leeds City Council.
The vicar Rev Rosemarie Hayes raised thousands through a sponsored parachute jump.
