Wakefield: Food hall won't open until the spring

The food hall at Wakefield's new indoor market will not be re-opened until next spring.

A Wakefield Council report has revealed the food hall was shut down just over a year ago for environmental reasons.

The new 3m indoor market, next to Wakefield bus station, was opened in June 2008. But in October 2008 it was closed on the advice of Environmental Health.

Stacey Burlet, Wakefield Council's service manager with responsibility for markets, said: "The costs of renovating the food hall are not yet known as the tender procedure has not yet been carried out. Now that the original contractors for the market hall have been appointed to complete Trinity Walk, the council will be negotiating to establish who will stand the costs of the work."
