Wakefield: Angina attack driver gets parking fine

An angina attack victim claims he was given a parking ticket after he pulled on to a Wakefield city centre car park.

Disabled Alwyn Thorpe, 58, says he was gasping for breath and pulled into Smyth Street car park.

He took his medication and stayed in the car park for an hour waiting for his wife to come to his aid.

Days later a 60 fine dropped through his letterbox.

Disabled Mr Thorpe, 58, has to take medication immediately when he feels an attack coming on.

He said: "I was in pain, gasping for breath. It never crossed my mind to get a ticket. I just needed to get off the road."

Although he has explained the circumstances and sent a postal order for the parking fee, he says Excel Parking Services has warned him the fine will rise to 100 if not paid soon."

A spokesman for Sheffield-based Excel Parking Services said: "We have been informed of the mitigating circumstances.

"However, we feel the time that elapsed without purchasing a ticket was unreasonable."
