Travel: Leaving it late to book a break
Around five per cent of holidaymakers booked their summer break this year just two weeks before departing, a survey showed today.
The average cost of one-week, last-minute deals to Spain was 670 this year, the poll by Sainsbury's Credit Cards found.
This compared with 520 for a last-minute deal in Greece, 956 in Italy and 426 in Turkey.
The survey of 2,035 adults also revealed that 11% booked their summer break four weeks before departure, with 19.4% booking one to two months before leaving and 29.5% making arrangements three to five months before going away.
A total of 26% booked six to 12 months before departure, while 5% booked a year or more before leaving.
The poll also showed that those taking summer holidays this year put around 5.46 billion of the cost on credit cards - equating to 424.50 per person.
Only 58% of people will pay this off within a month, with the average time taken to clear the cost being two and a half months, 13% taking between five and 12 months to clear it and 5% taking more than a year to complete payment.
