Tragedy led Tina to fight violence
By Nick Ahad A COUNCILLOR, moved by a domestic killing in her own ward, has donated thousands of pounds to the fight against violence in the home.
Leeds Councillor Tina Davy is using a 2,000 pot of cash given to her by the council to help promote Women's Aid – a national charity that helps victims of domestic violence.
The Leeds branch of the charity is looking forward to receiving the cash from Coun Davy (Burmantofts, Lab).
The money will be used to promote the work of the charity by producing business cards and leaflets which will be distributed in doctor's surgeries, schools and other places where the charity hopes to reach the people that need its help.
Extremes
"In my ward in the Gipton area a few years ago there was an awful example of the extremes that domestic violence can reach when a woman was stabbed to death by her husband in front of their children," said Coun Davy.
"Ever since I became a councillor I have been actively involved in promoting the issue of domestic violence and tried to highlight it as an issue."
Coun Davy's cash donation is coming from a Leeds Council pot that it gives to each councillor called MICE money – which stands for Miscellaneous Improvements to the Community and Environment.
"Domestic violence is something that affects people everywhere. Often women who are victims of domestic violence do not know where they can to turn to," said Coun Davy.
"I hope the money that I am giving to the Leeds branch of Women's Aid will be used to promote the good work it does and get the message out to those women who need to hear it that there is somewhere to turn to if they need help."
Women's Aid Federation of England (Women's Aid) is the national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children.
The charity's aim is to advocate for abused women and children and to ensure their safety by working locally and nationally to offer support and a place of safety to abused women and children by providing refuges and other services, promote policies and practices to prevent domestic violence and raise awareness of the extent and impact of domestic violence in society
The Leeds branch has recently opened new offices thanks to money donated by local businesses.
The address of the office is not given out to give the women who use it the assurance that it is confidential.
It runs a national helpline which can be contacted on 08457 023468.
