Thorner: Village hall to stage Fame

THE streets of New York are lined with thousands of yellow cabs – but the famous taxi has never been seen at Thorner's Victory Hall.

That is, until this week, when youngsters starring in Fame: The Musical will bring a taste of America to the village.

Fame: The Musical is the eighth production by the 1020 Musical Youth Company.

The show-stopping production opens tonight for a five-night run – and there are only a few tickets left for tomorrow night's performance.

The highlight of the musical will be the appearance of the New York taxi during the song, I'm Gonna Live Forever.

1020's founder and director Jeanette Blackburn said: "It's a fabulous show with loads of different styles of music, from rock to ballads and classical to flamenco. All our cast members have been working extremely hard for the past three months to create a fantastic show."

Past productions by 1020, who are all aged between 10 and 20, include High School Musical, Steel Magnolias and West Side Story.

The backdrop for Fame: The Musical was designed by Nick Wingfield, one of the cast members' dads, who replicated the original Fame drama school in New York; while fellow dad Ian Giles built the set, which required a three-metre extension onto the tiny Victory Hall stage.

The band is led by 1020's musical director David Ireland, while a team of volunteers also helped.

Jeanette added: "We are thrilled to be such a well-supported group, giving young people the chance to take part in live musical theatre."
