The wedding I never thought I'd live to see

A Horsforth woman who almost died following a horrifying car accident has walked down the aisle with the man of her dreams.

Lisa Salmon, a 40-year-old feature writer, tied the knot with Mark Walker, a former Yorkshire Post journalist and long-term partner, in an emotional ceremony at Chevin Country Park Hotel, Otley.

There were few dry eyes as the couple took their vows in front of about 80 family and friends and the couple's two boys, Cristian and Joel.

Wiping away a tear, Gail Robinson, one of Lisa's closest friends, said: "I remember Mark sitting by her bedside in the hospital and now here they are getting married and she looks absolutely stunning.

"There's a lot of rubbish talked about 'fairytale weddings' and that sort of thing but if anyone deserves a happy wedding and 'happy ever after' it's Lisa and Mark.

"He moved in with her on a Friday six years ago and on the Sunday she had the accident. She survived 13 hours of surgery, painful plastic surgery and a year later she had gone back to work and given birth."

Sadly baby Conor died two days later.

"She also developed deep vein thrombosis and ended up in hospital for five weeks so if anyone deserves a lovely wedding it's her."

Lisa, dressed in a designer ivory-beaded halterneck gown with matching stole, said: "We have meant to get married for some time but it's been a question of getting round to it.

"I never would have imagined after the accident there would be a day like today with two lovely kids running around causing chaos, everything normal and I would be so happy really.

"Lots of people have told us how emotional they have found it because they never expected it to happen. We have both been really looking forward to getting our families and friends together. The last time was Conor's funeral so it's nice to have everyone together for a happy occasion such as this."

Mark, 41, recalled how not long after the car accident Lisa had enjoyed imagining her wedding day as they shared a romantic evening under the Bridge of Sighs, Venice.

He said: "I was a bit nervous at first during the service but I'm excited now and looking forward to the party this evening and honeymoon in Tuscany."

Lisa's survival in January 2001 was little short of miraculous. A lorry hit her car head-on and doctors gave her only hours to live.

But Yorkshire Air Ambulance ensured she received immediate medical help and although it took nine months to repair her crushed face and skull leaving her partially sighted and badly scarred, she made an amazing recovery.
