Temple Newsam Park: Santas yuletide run raises cash for charity

These sprightly Santas made a ho-ho-whole lot of money for charity when they took part in a fundraising yuletide run.

Dozens of red-suited runners lined up for the Santa dash at historic Temple Newsam house to raise cash for the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB).

The only thing that was missing was reindeer and sleighbells as the white-bearded bunch raced off at midday on Sunday, determined not to let the wet weather dampen their seasonal spirits.

Runners ranged from three to 60, with parents and children running together – and some of them enjoyed the 3km circuit so much they did it twice.

Alex Geldard, who joined dad Kevin and colleagues from St James' Hospital in donning santa-suit and trainers, said the event was a good way to get healthy and raise money for a worthy cause at Christmas.

Jacquie McGuire, organiser and community fundraising manager for the Leeds branch of RNIB, said: "We have not had a Santa run in Leeds before but it's gone very well.

"It's good fun and it's a great Christmas present for the charity."

About 1,500 was raised from Sunday's event.

The money will go to the Leeds branch of RNIB to boost its Family and Education Services department.
