The third annual eco-friendly event will take place on Sunday September 27 at Temple Newsam.

Sticking with the spirit of a traditional triathlon, the fundraiser is a three-part event featuring a run.

But that's where the similarity ends.

Rather than face the gruelling challenges of swimming and cycling, the Tree-Athletes simply have to run 5km, make a tree wish and receive a small native tree sapling to take home and plant.

All the cash raised from the Tree-Athlon, organised by independent charity Trees for Cities, goes towards tree-planting projects in both Leeds and beyond.

Trees for Cities also sponsors tree planting projects in Peru, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Even for non-runners and non-climbers there is plenty of entertainment, with woodland walks, planting demonstrations, question-and- answer sessions with gardeners and foresters, face-painting and steel bands.

The estate will also be hosting a tree-climbing competition with the number of competitors limited to 25. There is an entry fee of 20 per person. Professional climbing arborists should contact Leeds City Council's Forestry Service at The Farm House, Red Hall Lane, Leeds LS17 8NB for an entry form.

To take part in the Tree-Athlon, register online at www.tree-athlon.org for 10. Every runner must raise a minimum of 25.

The event, from 10.30am to 3pm, is organised with Metro, in partnership with Leeds City Council and Radio Aire and is sponsored by Arup, as well as Leeds and Reading Festival organiser Festival Republic, Palo Alto wines, and Velvet.
