Speeding Dewsbury cabbie was caught out

CABBIE Rafaqat Ali tried to cheat speed camera charges by lying about who was behind the wheel of his taxi.

But police discovered the man he claimed had been driving his taxi was in jail at the time of the offences.

Leeds Crown Court heard Ali's taxi was snapped speeding five times by speed cameras in Wakefield and Ackworth from January to March. Each time Ali returned the notice of prosecution stating John Ralph was driving at the time.

In March Mr Ralph contacted the speeding unit saying he could not have been driving because he was in prison between May 2005 and March 4 this year.

Ali, of Clarkson Street, Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, received a nine-month jail sentence suspended for two years and was ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work and banned from driving for 12 months after admitting perverting the course of justice and five speeding offences.
