Residents have become increasingly concerned about vehicles speeding through their area, sparking fears about the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
Leeds City Council has already implemented a number of traffic calming features, but has now brought forward plans to go one step further by making the Dragon estate a 20mph zone.
The message to motorists will be drilled home with 20mph signs designed by local schoolchildren.
Councillor Stuart Andrew (Con, Lead Member for Transport) said: "People in and around Dragon Drive are rightly keen to ensure that their children are safe when walking near their homes. The estate sits between two busy roads and many drivers go too fast through the area. As a result there have been a number of accidents in the last few years, and residents are concerned that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.
"This issue is of real importance to local people, who have campaigned hard to get something done. We have taken action in the past to improve the situation by installing speed bumps in the area, but I am delighted we are now in a position to go one step further with the creation of this 20mph zone."
Coun Andrew added: "This will send a message to drivers that they should drive carefully through residential areas such as this, and that message will be reinforced by signs designed by local youngsters. I am sure they will come up with some great designs, and I am sure this work will help them to stay safe on the streets where they live."
