Hundreds of youngsters enjoyed a day of adventurous activities.

Around 400 children and 75 grown-ups at Beckett Park dressed up in weird and wonderful costumes, built their own wooden go-karts, made dens and climbed trees.

The event was organised by Leeds Play Network (LPN) and followed on from the successful Leeds National Play Day.

LPN's Andrea Hey, who organised the festival, said: "The go-kart making went down particularly well. It was a great day and was very much about going back to natural play.

"They made some brilliant tree swings, built fantastic dens in the woods and the water slide went down very well too."

This summer a team of qualified play workers have helped youngsters in Hawksworth and Wetherby to have fun outside, through LPN's street play project, providing opportunities for tree climbing, using rope swings, camp-fire cooking, using tools and making go- karts.

The open-access sessions encourage children to understand their natural environment and use materials found on their doorsteps.

The charity's Re-play project collects materials that would normally go into landfill – like wooden pallets – and re-uses them as play equipment.
