And head teacher Mark Edwards is to go out there to discuss the possibilities of a new exchange where the children would visit each other's schools.

He said: "Obviously there will be difficulties because of the cost and the age of the children, but I will be looking at all of the aspects and if possible we would like the first trip to be next summer.

"The children out there have such a great respect for their education and really want to learn - it would be great for our children to see that."

During the last four years the two schools have taken part in many joint projects, including one in which they used photographs to advise each other about how to change areas of their community which they disliked.

Teachers from the Sri Lankan school have also visited Shire Oak to teach the children about their culture and taught practical classes such as traditional cooking and dance.

The link started after the devastating tsunami in 2004 when the children at Shire Oak set up a Fairtrade tuck shop and gave all of the profits to a Muslim primary school which had been badly affected by the disaster.

Mr Edwards said: "We were really pleased to get the award. This is the culmination of four years of hard work by the pupils and staff in both schools here and in Sri Lanka."

The award is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and managed by the British Council. It was presented at a ceremony in London by journalist and BBC news reader George Alagiah who is known for his international reporting, including coverage of the tsunami.
