Shadwell: Parish council calls for action at danger spot
Shadwell parish council is calling for urgent safety measures at an accident blackspot.
Shadwell and Thorner PCs have written to police, city highways, the coroner and others about the dangers of the Carr Lane/A 58 Wetherby Road junction.
Two fatal accidents occurred there in July, 2006, but they were not isolated, says Gloria Ford, clerk to Shadwell PC.
"Residents of Shadwell and Thorner, particularly those who live at Birkby and Eltofts, can recall numerous less serious accidents and near misses," she writes. There was a further serious incident on September 24 this year when one of the vehicles involved overturned. Fortunately, the injuries were referred to as 'minor'.
"The overwhelming majority of accidents at this junction are caused by vehicles emerging from Carr Lane from the Shadwell side. Vehicles use Carr Lane to turn right to travel towards Leeds to avoid the Coal Road/Wetherby Road junction."
The two councils propose three safety measures:
* Hedgerows should be drastically reduced in height or volume or even removed;
* Give Way signs should be replaced;
* Carr Lane on the Shadwell side should have a ramp or different coloured road surface.
They also say a reduction in the speed limit on Wetherby Road close to the junction should be considered and there should be more warning signs on the main road.
Mrs Ford stressed a proper programme of maintenance for hedgerows and verges should be implemented.
The two parish councils believe that there should be STOP signs on both Shadwell and Thorner sides of the junction.
