Expelled schoolkids in Roundhay and will receive a 4,917 grant from councillors to help them get back into class.

The scheme, run by voluntary group Leeds REACH, uses recreational activities to help expelled pupils continue their academic education.

Councillors on the North East Inner Area Committee authorised the grant, which will pay for sports sessions that contribute towards the pupils achieving the Duke of Edinburgh award.

Councillor Matthew Lobley (Chair of the Area Committee) said: "Voluntary groups like Leeds REACH provide invaluable services to the community and deserve our support.

"It is important that these children are involved in worthwhile educational activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh programme, rather than being left to roam the streets when they are expelled.

"Programmes like this help expelled young people achieve more with their lives.

"It helps them to stay out of trouble and get back into mainstream schooling or alternatively to find employment when they are old enough."

The North East Inner Area Committee has agreed to grant 4,917 from its area well-being budget towards the project.

The funding will pay for the hire of Scott Hall Leisure Centre and sports coaches.

Leeds REACH works with children from Roundhay, Carr Manor, and Allerton Grange schools.
