The children from Scala School of Performing Arts raised 6,600 for Martin House hospice, much of it through their spring show over four nights at Yeadon Town Hall, the last night of which was a sell out.

It featured excerpts from top film and stage musicals such as We Will Rock You, Hairspray and Guys and Dolls and numbers from Disney productions, including Peter Pan.

Principal Lynne Walker handed over the cheque to the hospice at Clifford, near Wetherby. Donations, the sale of uniforms and school tuck shop sales bolstered the fund-raising effort.

She said: "We would like to thank everyone who saw the children perform. Through their support the show was an astounding success."

Lynne founded Scala 35 years ago, having trained 12 girls for a panto in a Bradford cinema called the Scala.

Among pupils who have gone on success, is Horsforth-born Matthew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films.

Nine-year-old Imani McLaren is in Dublin filming BBC drama The Return.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Amber Freeman and Tamsin Mitchell, eight, will be seen in Channel 4's forthcoming Red Riding trilogy, penned by David Peace and set in West Yorkshire in the 1970s and 1980s.
