Roundhay: St Andrew's welcomes new Yorkshire Moderator

St Andrew's United Reformed Church in Roundhay has welcomed the new Moderator of the Yorkshire Synod of the United Reformed Church, Rev Kevin Watson.

He visited St Andrew's in July, as part of a tour of all URC churches in Yorkshire, following his induction as Moderator in March.

He also visited Wigton Moor United Reformed Church in Leeds on the same day.

"I want to see more people using churches," said Mr Watson. "Churches are for the whole community. I'm very pleased and impressed with what St Andrew's is doing to serve God in the Roundhay community. Hundreds of children and their families use St Andrew's – in toddler groups, the uniformed organisations, and worship on Sundays. In fact, all ages find a home in activities at St Andrew's. Serving the community is answering God's call."

Rev David Pickering, minister at St Andrew's, said: "We were very pleased to welcome our new Moderator,"

"He was able to meet many St Andrew's people. We told him of our activities and of our covenant with other churches in Roundhay. We are glad to have his encouragement of our work."

Mr Watson is a graduate of Leeds University. He will be based in Morley. He was previously United Reformed Church minister at Ponteland near Newcastle upon Tyne.

"To share the Gospel with our neighbours we have to show we believe it and we stake our lives on it. St Andrew's does that here in Roundhay. I look forward to joining St Andrew's at a Sunday service.

"I like the new community garden and hopefully I'll pick a Sunday when some or all of the service will be in the garden. The community garden is a wonderful gift from God and I pray for God's continuing blessing on St Andrew's service to the community in Roundhay," added Mr Watson.
