Roundhay School: Maths teacher is top crossword puzzler
The nimble mind of Roundhay School maths teacher David Howell will be kept busy in retirement.
For he is a top crossword puzzler and will compete in The Times national championship in Cheltenham this October.
Mr Howell, 55, who leaves Roundhay School this month after 16 years' service, was crossword champion in 1997 and has been runner-up four times.
"I think to do well you need a lot of lateral thinking, a good general knowledge and a wide vocabulary," he said.
"In retirement I hope to do crosswords in a more relaxed state. In The Times competition, I will be given four puzzles to complete within a period of one hour. I can usually finish one in about eight minutes."
Mr Howell has been in teaching for 32 years and has also worked at Castleford High School and Hough Side School, Swinnow.
"I have always found maths an easy subject," he went on. "It came naturally to me."
