Rev David Pickering, minister of St Andrew's says the new toilets are part of the church's "investment in facilities for the community."

More than 30 community groups use St Andrew's each week, including uniformed organisations, the Workers Education Association, toddlers' and new mums' groups, and Seacroft Hospital's Stroke Support Group.

All together, that's about 750 attendances by people each week, and we also have a lot of private bookings.

Plus, St Andrew's hosts first aid courses, Leeds City Council's under 8s training, jazz concerts and drama productions.

Recently, St Andrew's provided location facilities for the forthcoming Channel 4 film trilogy, Red Riding.

All this is in addition to worship and other church activities and is part of our service to God. But the loos were, to quote one of St Andrew's young people, 'minging'.

"They're very smart now." explains David Pickering.

David Porter, convenor of St Andrew's Fabric Committee that organised the work, added: "This 45,000 development doubles toilet facilities for women and increases those for men by 50%. There are ambulatory toilets for male and female disabled people in addition to an existing facility for wheelchair users. We've installed a new unisex baby changing room. As an Eco-Congregation award winning church, we have used energy saving devices throughout, including dual flushes, sensor activated lighting and pressure taps."

"We are paying for these new loos with grants, a loan and fundraising. We are very grateful for a grant of 10,000 towards the work from the North East (Inner) Area Committee Well Being Fund.

The first fundraising event for general developments was Music in the Air, a musical extravaganza led by Sarah Baker, Head of Guiseley Music Centre.

Rev Pickering added: "We pray that God will bless this event and all our service to the community in Roundhay."
