Roundhay folk give generously to Christian Aid week
Churches Together in Roundhay today issued a thank you to local residents for their generous response to Christian Aid week.
People throughout Roundhay have given 8,819 to the annual appeal in Christian Aid week in May
Joanna Dales, speaking for the Churches Together in Roundhay, said: "With the tax to be recovered from the government in Gift Aid, the total from generous Roundhay is 9,719."
Joanna announced the total collected for Christian Aid at a meeting of the Churches Together in Roundhay on Tuesday, July 8.
Churches Together in Roundhay brings local churches together in various shared initiatives.
The churches are: Lidgett Park Methodist Church, St Andrew's United Reformed Church, St Edmund's Church of England, Society of Friends (Quakers) in Roundhay, and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
"The money raised will go to help poor people around the world cope when disasters strike. This year especially Christian Aid has helped with the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis in Burma, Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh and Typhoon Fengshen in the Philippines," added Joanna.
"Roundhay people are always keen to give. Often they have jars of coins collected all year waiting by the door for the collected. And someone who wasn't in when I called put 50 through my letter-box as a result of a personalised "sorry you were out" slip! Besides door to door collections, there was a very successful quiz night."
"People around the world will benefit. Jesus taught us to care for suffering people wherever they are and we thank God for Roundhay's generosity."
