Roundhay: Different faiths find common ground

Different faiths have found understanding and common ground in Roundhay.

Rabbi Ian Morris of Sinai Synagogue in Roman Avenue in Roundhay, told Roundhay Today: "More than 30 people – Christians, Muslims, Jews and other different faiths – met for a day of exploring the Jewish and Christian faiths,"

"It was part of the Living Faiths – Faith Matters in Leeds initiative."

"We spent the morning at Sinai Synagogue, a member of the Movement for Reform Judaism. We learned about the Torah and the Ark, and about the Tallit shawl, the Yarmulke skullcap and other Jewish symbols.

Those taking part then had lunch at at Sinai before taking a walk of faith to St Andrew's United Reformed Church.

Mr Morris added: "There we talked about the Bible and the Cross. We discovered that the dove and candles, and bread and wine are significant both to Christians and to Jews."

Rev David Pickering, minister of St Andrew's United Reformed Church on Shaftesbury Avenue in Roundhay, said: "As are equality, human rights and serving the wider community, through which all faiths serve God.

"We affirmed our friendship from our different faiths. Our day concluded with Rabbi Ian Morris pronouncing the blessing in Hebrew upon us all in the sanctuary of St Andrew's Church."

"We learned about differences and had the joy of discovering much more that we had in common. In getting to know Ian Morris, a relative stranger has become a friend," David Pickering concluded.
