Rothwell Carnival back on track for 2010

Funding has been secured to help guarantee the future of Rothewell Carnival.

The Rothwell May Day and carnival celebrations will be reinvigorated thanks to 10,000 from councillors and a group of new volunteers who are committed to making next year's events bigger and better than ever.

A question mark has hung over the future of Rothwell's traditional May Day and carnival celebrations over recent years as red tape, costs and a fall in volunteers caused organisers to question whether to carry on.

After an appeal was launched for volunteers to save the event, a new Rothwell carnival committee has been formed and local councillors have been keen to show their support.

Councillor Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) said: "The new committee are very enthusiastic. We decided that one of the best ways to get the new group off to a good start was to give them some financial stability. We lobbied the Outer South Area Committee and secured 10,000 for community events in the Rothwell ward."

Councillor Don Wilson (Lib Dem, Rothwell) added: "The carnival and May Day celebrations are some of the best attended local festivals. The carnival committee have ambitious plans for 2010. It's good that we can help them plan this without worrying about money."
