The Raise the Roof fund will help pay for repairs to the popular hides at the Leeds nature reserve, which were destroyed in September.

A wooden hide was completely burnt down and a metal bird hide close by was gutted the following night.

The reserve, which is run entirely by volunteers, attracts 20,000 visitors each year with local school children regularly using it to learn about wildlife.

Peter Murphy, secretary of the reserve trust, said: "I think people who regularly use the reserve or live close by have been horrified about what has happened.

"I can't understand why people would want to do this to a free resource to local people. It is beyond belief really."

A recent summer fair raised around 1,600 towards the work of the reserve but now a further 2,000 is needed to pay for the damage.

Mr Murphy said that the donations from people who regularly visit the reserve or live close by have already hit the 950 mark.

He said: "It has been most touching for us that people have already started to help out.We are very grateful for the donations. We want to continue to make the reserve a nice place for people to visit."

The Friends will be holding a Pie and Pea Day on October 31 at the reserve at noon.

To book, ring 0113 204 0441 between 10am-4pm on Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday.

There are collection boxes in the visitor centre for donations.
