Ricky Nugent: Tributes pour in for rugby teenager

Fresh tributes have been paid to a Wortley teenager who died from a brain haemorrhage.

Ricky Nugent, 16, from Lower Wortley, died on Tuesday after falling ill at the weekend while playing rugby for a West Leeds ARL under-17s side at Shaw Cross Sharks in Dewsbury.

Today, staff at his old school said they were "shocked and saddened".

Farnley Park Maths and Computing College acting head Philip McEvoy told Wortley Today: "Ricky was a popular student and successful sportsman who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Support and counselling is available at the school to anybody who needs it."

Dozens of tributes have also been left on the Gone Too Soon memorial website.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) said it had been "deeply saddened".

"While there is no suggestion at this stage that (Ricky] playing the game he loved had any part to play in this terrible tragedy, both the RFL and the RFL Benevolent Fund will offer their full support to his family in the weeks and months ahead."
