Putting the future of Headingley down on paper
Work is about to start on a document that could help shape the future of Headingley, and put the community's aspirations down in black and white.
The Headingley Development Trust have been commissioned by the council's Inner North West Area Committee to create a Neighbourhood Design Statement.
Using input from the community, the statement will outline the buildings and landscape which make the area distinctive and provide recommendations to encourage new development that enhances and complements those features.
Project leader Richard Tyler said: "When it is finished it will mean any proposals for development will have to take this document into account.
"Having a document there that says this is what we value, this is what we want to protect, actually having it down in black and white and colour, will make a tremendous contribution, not only to future development in the area but also to the morale of the community."
The area it will include extends from Shaw Lane along Headingley Lane to Woodhouse Moor, and between Woodhouse Ridge to the east and the Harrogate railway line to the west.
The council's Inner North West Area Committee has contributed 5,000 towards the project.
Committee member Coun Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said: "The design statement will help us decide how we make our neighbourhood distinctive. It will help us encourage new development that both enhances and complements what is already there.
"This is a tribute to the hard work of the Headingley Development Trust and North Hyde Park Neighbourhood Association in getting the project off the ground. This is quite clearly a very important project for the area so, as a member of the area committee, I am very glad to be funding it."
Also a committee member and Hyde Park councillor, Penny Ewens (Lib Dem) added: "This is an opportunity for local people to shape the development of the Headingley and Hyde Park areas for years to come.
"These areas currently face a lot of pressures, be it from the demand for student accommodation or from the endless torrent of applications for late night takeaways and booze spots.
"For the project to be a success, we need as many local groups as possible to get involved so I would urge anybody interested to come to the launch on Saturday."
That launch takes place at 10am on Saturday at Headingley St Columba's on Headingley Lane, with everyone welcome to come along and find out more.
