Pupils safer thanks to campaign for Calverley crossing

Pedestrians and school children should now find it easier to cross a busy Calverley road, following a campaign by local councillors.

A new pedestrian crossing is now in use outside Calverley Church of England Primary School.

Councillor Andrew Carter (Con, Calverley and Farsley), who is Leeds City Council leader, said: "We have campaigned for a crossing at this location for a number of years because this is an extremely busy road outside a school.

"It is the main road through Calverley that links Leeds with Shipley, Bingley, Skipton and beyond, and it was becoming more and more dangerous to cross.

"I'm thrilled that our campaign has been successful and am pleased that children and parents going to and from school will now be able to cross the road more safely.

"We want to encourage more people to walk to school, rather than go by car. To do that we need to ensure they can walk there safely, and this crossing will help people do that in Calverley."

The crossing is located on Town Gate/Carr Road (A657).

The crossing was constructed at a cost of 101,000 from the council's capital programme.
