Pudsey folk face £75 street litter fine
Pudsey residents are being warned that they could face a £75 fine if they are caught dropping litter in the streets.
The Don't Witter if you Drop Litter campaign has been launched in the market town after an increase in the amount of rubbish on the paths.
The Environmental Action Team from Leeds City Council joined forces with the Pudsey Neighbourhood Policing Team to educate people in the town centre about littering.
People were warned they could face a 75 fine or they would have to carry out litter picking duties on a Saturday morning if they couldn't pay it.
Ruth Turner from Environmental Action claimed that there had been an increase in the amount of litter especially at lunch times when children were out of school.
She said: "There has been quite a bad problem with litter in the town especially from school children. It was all about educating people."
The first purge took place at the start of this month and Ruth Turner said that there had been a noticeable difference during the first week of action.
She said: "During that week it was very good. It was very clean and even now it has not been as bad as it has been.
"Litter has been quite bad.
"We could go out before lunch and it would be fine but after lunch there would be chip trays and papers on the floor.
"During the week it was not too bad and since then it has not been anywhere near as bad."
The team are hoping to roll out the crackdown on litter on a monthly basis.
Town centre manager Nigel Conder said: "I think it is positive action that we made particularly when we had the bin strike on so that we could try to educate people to not drop litter.
"It is giving warning to people just to try and take some civic pride in the town they live in.
"We are just trying to educate them at the end of the day."
