Public nativity scene brings out the best in Cross Gates shoppers
Cross Gates has experienced somewhat of a renaissance of the traditional crib-scene this year.
Thanks to Churches Together in Leeds 15, an impressive nativity display standing half a metre high has been erected on the main Station Road Mall of Crossgates Shopping Centre.

The crib was built by local St Theresa's Church parishioner Frank Seaman, which has been beautifully carved without the need for nails or screws.
The scene also features a shining star and Christmas carol audio system, built into the crib, courtesy of Cross Gates Methodist Church in Austhorpe Road. Such is the appeal of the nativity tableau that this is its third year on display in the heart of the Centre.
"We are delighted to have been selected by Churches Together in Leeds 15 to be the recipient of the crib for another year," says Crossgates Shopping Centre Manager Stephen Seymour.
"In the run-up to Christmas, the Centre has been raising money for St Gemma's Hospice through Santa's Grotto and regular collections on the Mall. Yet there is no doubt at all that this nativity scene has been a major contributor in encouraging and inspiring people to give to charity. We're very proud to have such a fine crib on display."
So far, staff at Crossgates Shopping Centre estimate that they have raised over 500 for St Gemma's Hospice, and this figure is expected to rise to 750 by the time Christmas arrives.
"We'd particularly like to thank Crossgates Shopping Centre and the people of Cross Gates for all their help in raising funds for the charity over the past month", says Anne Malia, from St Gemma's Hospice.
"Being a major provider of palliative care for the terminally ill, we very much appreciate people's support and it's great to see such tremendous generosity in action, particularly at this time of year."
