Prime Minister officially opens Allerton High

The Prime Minister has officially opened Allerton High School, which he described as "the most open, colourful and innovative school" he'd seen for a number of years.

Gordon Brown was joined by Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, on a visit to the Moortown school to coincide with the Government's Cabinet visit to Leeds.

The Prime Minister praised the school for leading the way with community facilities - highlighting the school's unique multi-faith hall - and said it should be used as a model for new schools across the country.

Allerton High was one of three new secondary schools opened in September as part of the Government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) investment programme.

Headteacher, Elaine Silson, said: "The facilities we have and the environment our young people are learning in are some of the best in the country. I am very proud of the school and know that Gordon Brown and Ed Balls were very impressed by what they saw."

Coun Richard Harker, executive board member for education at Leeds City Council, said: "The city council is pleased to provide this 21st century learning environment which is providing our young people with skills, knowledge and experience for the best start to their adult lives."

Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "Education Leeds has a wonderful track record of creating state-of-the-art buildings and facilities but this school has taken this achievement to a new height.

"We are committed to providing learning environments where every young person can be happy, healthy, safe and successful. The Prime Minister's endorsement of Allerton High School as a unique learning environment designed for the whole community is a testament to the success of the BSF programme in Leeds."

Features at the school include two purpose-built drama studios, a covered external amphitheatre which can be used as a social space, a science terrace for external experiments and curriculum gardens.

There are also faculty-based 'breakout spaces', two rooms fitted with sound and vision recording facilities, linked by an observatory.

Students with special education needs are also benefiting from a partnership with the North West Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC) and an on-site specialist autistic unit.

The school has over 1,000 personal computer devices and a recording studio and also features a unique multi-faith centre which includes a hall, teaching spaces and separate storage facilities for faith groups' artefacts.
