Parties meet for showdown talks over future of school site in Headingley

Leeds Girls' High School is set for showdown talks next week with council leaders and Headingley residents over plans for the school site.

The meeting on Friday, October 12, will see an exchange of views between the school, members of the public who have opposed the plans and joint council leaders, Coun Mark Harris and Coun Andrew Carter.

Leeds Girls' High School head, Sue Fishburn, said: "We respect and appreciate the willingness of both council leaders to arrange this meeting and have confirmed that a representative of the school will attend.

"Our trustees have decided to delay any further decision about the exact nature of the sale and redevelopment of the site until we have again heard and considered community views."

The school then plans to make a public statement after the meeting to outline the next step in selling the site. It worked closely with Leeds City Council for over a year on the production of a draft Development Brief for the site, which senior councillors rejected last month.

Chair of Leeds Girls' High School Action Group, Pam Bone, said: "We want to have a discussion with the school to find the way forward.

"We see this meeting as a first step in getting it right and we would like to see a better development brief created for the site.

"We see this as the start rather than the end of discussions.

"They cannot separate the Elinor Lupton Centre from discussions as the community cannot separate it. Both sites are close to each other and will affect us and the community."

The school is keen to separate the two sites and has said in recent weeks that as a charity it needs to sell the Elinor Lupton Centre to the highest bidder. Pub chain J D Wetherspoon has confirmed an interest.

Leeds Girls' High School is merging with Leeds Grammar School next year when two thirds of the school buildings will become surplus to requirements.

It wants to sell the vacant land and buildings for redevelopment into housing.
