MP swaps casework for homework at Headingley school
The hot topic of homework was on the debating agenda at a school in Headingley as local MP Greg Mulholland held a Mini Parliament with pupils.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West swapped the House of Commons for the classroom as he helped students at Richmond House School understand how Parliament works.
Greg explained to children what being an MP involves and also gave a brief introduction to the workings of Westminster before embarking on the sensitive subject of the best age for children to be given homework.
The 10 and 11-year-olds took part in the Mini Parliament, with Greg acting as the Speaker, to debate whether children aged seven to 11 should be given homework – or whether this should wait until pupils go to high school.
The class was split into two groups, with a government side proposing the motion and the other group as the opposition.
Greg said: "I was delighted to be invited to Richmond House, which really does have fantastic facilities.
"It was very enjoyable to be able to talk to the children directly about exactly what Parliament does, and what MPs like me are here for.
"Myself and the pupils really enjoyed the debate and I believe we may have a few budding politicians in the class."
Julie Godsave, acting head teacher, said: "It's vital that children learn about Parliament from a young age as the decisions we make will affect every aspect of their lives in the future."
Youngsters at the school have also been busy raising funds for a Leeds-based Kenyan children's charity.
The pupils were able to buy a gift-wrapped Rolo chocolate for 50p which was delivered to their chosen recipient – a best friend, admired fellow pupil or favourite teacher.
The event raised almost 150 for the charity Kenyan Orphan Sponsorship Trust (KOST), which supports orphaned and abandoned children in Kenya. It operates two centres caring for 120 children.
