Moortown pupils are over the moon

Young stargazers at Moortown's Allerton Grange School couldn't wait to try out a new telescope.

Singh Marwaha, Naomi Leacock and Declan Cartwright went for a close-up of the cosmos after Allerton Grange School received the gift from the Society of Popular Astronomy, which is donating 1,000 telescopes to secondary schools in the UK, funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

The school already offers astronomy as a subject which pupils can study in their own time.

Last year 25 year-nine students got astronomy GCSEs and, despite taking the exam two years earlier than usual, over half of them achieved A-C grades.

This year another 20 will be studying with deputy headteacher Craig Baker, who is a keen astronomer and has taught the subject to adults.

He said: "This really generous gift will be put to good use observing the moon, star constellations and planets."
