Meet Leeds's eco pioneers

A multi-million pound eco-village planned for Leeds could be the first of its kind in the country.

The LILAC (Low Impact Living Affordable Community) scheme proposed for the site of the old Wyther Park Primary School in Bramley would be unique because of its three key elements – low environmental impact, affordable housing and community-focused.

The futuristic project will be ultra-sustainable, made from straw and timber, part-built by its residents, with hardly any artificial heating.

It would be the first of its kind to be affordable to ordinary people, with families on a salary of just 16,000 able to buy into the shared ownership scheme.

University of Leeds geography lecturer Paul Chatterton, founder member of LILAC, said: "Bringing these three aspects together, I would say we are the first."

A major theme is that the 20 homes remain affordable, rather than rising with the property market and becoming a money-spinner for residents.

Dr Chatterton said: "The idea is that it's affordable in perpetuity for the people of Leeds."

The group is still negotiating with Leeds City Council over purchasing the site but he said being based so near the city centre, in the heart of an established community, was unusual as most eco-villages are in rural locations.

Nine households have already signed up to the scheme but members are appealing for like-minded people to get in touch.

Residents have to be members of LILAC and are approved by other members. They will pay around 35 per cent of their monthly income towards their equity share.

A public consultation on the project takes place on September 24 from 2pm to 5pm and September 25 from 11am to 3pm at Victoria Park Gardens,

Victoria Park Avenue, Bramley.
