Library turns over £1.4m green leaf
A Leeds library is starting a new chapter as one of the city's greenest buildings after a £1.4m revamp.
The 43-year-old library at Garforth has been refurbished and extended with a range of green features including the use of recycled materials, solar panels and a "living" sedum roof which is energy efficient and provides a wildlife habitat.
It houses library services and those offered by the council's one-stop centre.
Housing, council tax, social care, environmental, community safety, an IT learning suite and a cafe are among services provided.
The project had 1.3m from the Big Lottery Fund and further support from energy-efficiency organisation Salix.
Coun John Procter, executive member for leisure, said: "We are all hugely excited to see the building open to the public. It looks fantastic and we are sure people will really enjoy the wide range of services on offer."
Vanessa White, head of the Big Lottery Fund in Yorkshire, said: "The fund has invested 8m to enable libraries to offer services beyond their traditional role."
Coun Mark Dobson (Lab, Garforth and Swillington) said: "A big thank-you has to go to the Big Lottery Fund for providing 1.3m in Garforth. It is fantastic they too recognise the huge benefits this centre will bring."
An appearance by award-winning author and illustrator Nick Sharratt and musical performances by Garforth College students will be among the attractions at a family fun day on Sunday.
