Leeds youngsters recruited as junior wardens

YOUNGSTERS in Cross Gates have been drafted in to help set an example to other kids around the area.

The children have been recruited as junior wardens by East North East Homes Leeds (ENEHL) to help improve their communities.

The recruits will get involved in projects like litter picks and will meet up with other members of the community.

The junior wardens are nine to 11-year-old pupils at Cross Gates Primary School on Poole Crescent.

They will also be looking out for where graffiti or fly-tipping has appeared, reporting broken streetlamps and spreading safety messages around the area.

Angelena Fixter, chairman of the East North East Homes Leeds board, said: "This is a great scheme to encourage community involvement at a very young age.

"It is important to counteract the negative image many people have about youths today ."

Community involvement officer David Cox, who coordinates the junior warden scheme, said: "ENEHL is keen to encourage the good traits in these young people that make them want to be junior wardens – the desire to make their area they live in safer and more pleasant for all."
