Leeds United dinner to thank heart unit after miracle surgery
A SPORTING dinner starring former Leeds United favourites is to be held in aid of young heart patients.
Cash raised will go towards the Leeds General Infirmary's Children's Heart Surgery Fund
The event has been planned as a thank you to the surgeons who helped a Leeds youngster defy overwhelming odds to survive one of the world's most complex heart operations.
Joshua Andrews, now a teenager, from Rothwell, fought an amazing medical battle when he was just two-years-old.
Born with the main arteries in his heart the wrong way round, he had to have one of the most difficult operations that can be performed on children.
If Joshua had been born just a few years earlier it is unlikely he would ever have seen his first birthday.
In April, United favourites of yesteryear, including manager Gary McAllister, turned out in force for a charity match at Robin Hood Athletic, where Joshua was one of the guests of honour.
A dinner is now to be held at the Salute restaurant, Church Street, Rothwell, on Sunday as a follow-up to the match.
Peter Lorimer, Scott Sellars, John Sheridan, Glyn Snodin and Brendan Ormsby are expected to be at Sunday's sell-out dinner along with soap stars from Emmerdale.
Josh's dad Graham Andrews said: "The football match turned out to be great day and a lot of sporting memorabilia was donated to us which we just did not have time to put up for auction."
Proceeds from the event will be split between the Children's Heart Surgery Fund and the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity.
