Leeds mattress firm cuts its hair miles by growing own wool

A bed firm in Beeston, Leeds, has bought a 300-acre sheep farm near York to produce its own wool for mattresses.

Harrison Spinks Beds, which supplies furniture to John Lewis and Barker & Stonehouse, has invested millions into Hornington Manor farm at Bolton Percy.

The farm is 20 miles from the firm's factory and headquarters and was bought as part of a drive by the firm to improve its environmental credentials by reducing the miles its supplies travel.

The wool has also proved popular with customers, the firm says.

Managing director Simon Spinks said: "Yorkshire is a great place to grow mattress wool. I think the harsh conditions give the wool that coarseness which makes it springy – fantastic for mattresses.

"A local supply of wool reduces the miles travelled from upwards of 10,000 to less than 50."
