Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society: Family affair for Mikado

Back in 1977 Janet Johnston combined the role of "yummy mummy" to her two young children with playing "Yum Yum" in Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society's Mikado.

Next week, 33 years on, she takes the contrasting role of battleaxe Katisha while her daughter Rebecca Stirk, now 35, plays Yum Yum's best

friend Pitti-Sing and her son, Matthew, 33, stage manages the show.

Today Janet, from Thorner and now the Society chairman, said: "I'm really enjoying playing the old dragon Katisha, especially opposite Becky. And having Matt in the wings stage-managing makes me really proud of them both."

Becky, from Morley, agrees; "It gives Pitti-Sing's defiance of Katisha an extra spice when you're facing down your mum!

"Matt and I have grown up with G&S – I think both of us appeared on stage with Mum before we were born! – and it's brilliant to be continuing the tradition."

The Mikado opens with matinee performances today and tomorrow at 2.30pm.

The show runs until the following Saturday with nightly performances at 7.30pm, and another matinee on Saturday March 13th. Tickets 6 – 16 with usual concessions.

On Monday 8th all tickets are 10. To book ring 0113 224 3801.
